SHULDINER DECLARES KELLY
"A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT"

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. – New York congressional candidate Ben Shuldiner today said that conservative Rep. Sue Kelly’s comments on President Bush’s bank monitoring system of potential terrorism is a ploy to appear more moderate than she actually votes.

“This is not a new problem, but it has taken Kelly nearly three weeks to express any concern,” Shuldiner said. “Kelly has consistently declared herself to be a moderate, but she has voted with the Bush administration more than 75 percent of the time and the Republican House Majority more than 85 percent of the time. Talk is cheap and Kelly’s actions are anything but moderate.”

On July 10, Kelly said that she had not been briefed on the existence of the program, despite the fact it was reported by several news organizations on June 23 and the information about the program has been available to the public for some time.

Kelly has constantly sided with the Bush administration on conservative issues such as maintaining the Patriot Act’s authority to spy on a citizen’s private lives. In addition, she has perpetuated a culture of corruption in Washington, illustrated by her vote to change the House ethics rules to allow Tom DeLay to remain the majority leader despite an indictment.

“Kelly’s allegiance to the Bush administration is clear and the people of this district will not be fooled by her rhetoric,” Shuldiner said. “Kelly is clearly not concerned about representing the moderate views of the citizens of this district. It’s important that the people vote to replace her in November with someone who is not a lapdog for Bush’s White House.”

Ben Shuldiner is the founder and principal of Brooklyn's High School for Public Service and the winner of the prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service. Shuldiner is running for Congress in the 19th Congressional District of New York, which includes portions of Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties and all of Putnam County.
